The growth of online instrumental learning has given music learners a wealth of options outside of the traditional in-person learning environment. I will compare and analyze programs, attempt to develop an understanding of the people who learn and teach such programs, and engage dialogue on the implications for music education.
Inspired by Song Exploder (a podcast and Netflix series where musicians dissect their own songs and tell stories of how they were developed), this Pop10! presentation offers a multi-layer strategy for students to critically and creatively interact with their own as well as their peers’ songwriting processes.
Creating a Culture of Belonging means creating psychologically safe relationships with members of a group. Using a culture of belonging framework (Kennedy & Jain-Link, 2021), popular music educators will consider how songwriting supports a Culture of Belonging. Attendees will be challenged to reflect on their own teaching practices to assist in developing ensemble coaching skills.
